Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19)
Coronavirus disease 2019 ( Covid-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person through droplets or secretions produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
Inhalation of these virus carrying droplets is believed to be the main form of transmission.
Patients can also contract the disease by coming in contact with surfaces contaminated with the virus and then touching their own nose, mouth or eyes.
Symptoms that include runny nose, cough, fever and shortness of breath may appear 2-14 days after exposure.
Body aches, sore throat, vomiting and diarrhea have also been reported.
Many patients have little or no symptoms.
For reasons that are not completely clear at this time, children and adolescents generally develop a milder form of the disease when compared to adults.
Severe illness is rare and there are significantly lower rates of hospitalization.
However, infants under age 1 and children with underlying medical conditions like heart disease, lung disease, diabetes and a suppressed immune system may have a harder time fighting this illness.
Although there are currently multiple medications undergoing clinical trials, there is no specific treatment for Covid-19 except for providing symptomatic relief and supportive care.
